We Lived Here : Stories of the Central Area
Paperback English
Interviewer Madeline Crowley
A followup to our 2016 title, Ghosts of Seattle Past, this book should hit a nerve with current and former Seattle residents. The Central Area was the hub of African American culture in Seattle for decades, but has been transformed in recent years by an influx of tech workers for Amazon.
Interview subjects include Black Panthers Mike Tagawa, as well as brothers Elmer and Aaron Dixon, and their mother, Frances Dixon.
This book will have regional sales potential and is likely to be strongly supported by Elliott Bay Books and other local indies.
The interviewer will return from her current home in Germany to hold readings and talks in the greater Seattle area in October/November 2019.
The book has aspects of The Neighborhood Story Project, which started as a series of books from the University of New Orleans Press in 2004 and morphed into a movement with the establishment of a nonprofit of the same name in New Orleans. The series of books sold more than 35,000 copies.
Crowley's interviews were originally published as podcasts at Storied Seattle
The Central Area was home to Quincy Jones and Jimi Hendrix. Reaching out to Quincy Jones and Angela Davis for blurbs.
